Viña Ventisquero welcomes Enclave, the newest member of its high-end range of wines

After a ten-year quest, winemakers Felipe Tosso and John Duval have succeeded in crafting a remarkable Cabernet Sauvignon, which they describe as complex, well-structured and elegant, reflecting the intense aromas and cassis of Maipo Alto. Enclave, the Maipo Alto discovery.
After a decade of searching for the perfect place to create a high-end Cabernet Sauvignon, the team at Viña Ventisquero is celebrating the fulfilment of this long-held dream. It all began during the harvest of 2001, when Viña Ventisquero’s Head Winemaker Felipe Tosso began to map blocks in the Trinidad vineyard that were well suited to the variety. Two years later, the idea gained momentum when John Duval joined the winery.
Right from the beginning, Tosso and Duval set out to create a different wine. They wanted to achieve a complex, elegant blend in the Bordeaux style. The big question was how to achieve this difference. Felipe Tosso explains, “we realized that we needed older vines, more than 20 years old, which grew in the country’s best terroir for this variety. So, during the 2005 harvest, we began looking beyond our own vineyards.”
The search brought them to Maipo Alto and they narrowed their investigation further until they reached Pirque, an area nurtured by the influence of the Andes Mountains and the Maipo River. Here, blessed by a Mediterranean climate with more extreme temperature oscillations than the Central Valley and Coastal areas, they found the perfect place.
The stage was set, but John Duval was not satisfied until he found the cassis and tannic definition that he knew were essential to achieving the structure and tannic complexity of a good Cabernet Sauvignon.
Considering the complexity of Chilean grapes, the winemakers decided that this Cabernet Sauvignon should have a unique blend: classic, but with a Chilean identity. Remaining true to their original idea, the blend includes Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc and Carménère.
In the words of Felipe Tosso: “The essence of Enclave is linked to Pirque; the altitude, mountains, winds and rocks that are abundant in this unique landscape, where the mountains appear to embrace the Maipo river. Enclave is a wine we thought about for a long time. We had the concept and the tastes we wanted to achieve in mind, we only achieved them with the creation of Enclave. It was a long, but steady journey. Today I can say that a glass of Enclave will challenge your senses, daring you to discover the mystery of its origin.”
The winemakers describe Enclave as being deep, dark red in colour. The nose reveals red fruit such as plums and cherries, a touch of cassis, white pepper, damp earth and a hint of black fruit. It has very interesting aromatic complexity.
In the mouth, this is a concentrated and well-structured wine with firm yet silky smooth tannins. Enclave has a long-lasting finish and the different varieties contribute multiple layers of flavour. The blend provides high cellaring potential, between 10 and 15 years.
